Gas-To-Liquid (GTL) Fuel, the Cleaner fuel alternative:

Reduce emissions of harmful PM and NOx with Shell GTL Fuel, a cleaner-burning diesel alternative.

What is Shell GTL Fuel?

Shell GTL (Gas-To-Liquid) Fuel is a cleaner burning diesel alternative fuel that can be used in both on road and off road vehicles and machinery. Proven to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions, reduce noise pollution and with winter-grade and biodegradable features, your business can improve its sustainability and environmentally credentials and benefits. After all, it’s good to lower emissions, good to listen, good to last and good to lead the way to a cleaner future.

What are the features and benefits?

Breathing in polluted air is known to have potential links to health problems, including respiratory illnesses. Air pollution is a key concern for those working around engines and communities affected by poor air quality. One of the major benefits of using Shell GTL Fuel is the reduction in emissions of regulated pollutants:

  • Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
  • Particulate matter (PM)
  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Hydrocarbons (HC)

Independent testing as well as Shell trials have shown that, depending on the application, NOx emissions can be reduced by up to 37%, whilst PM emissions can be reduced by up to 50%.

DROP IN AND GO - The fuel can be used as a direct replacement for conventional diesel fuels in heavy-duty and light-duty engines. So there’s no need for engine modifications, new infrastructure or vehicle investment.

BIODEGRADABLE AND NON-TOXIC - Shell GTL Fuel is proven to be less harmful to the environment, with tests showing that it can be classified as ‘readily biodegradable’ and non-toxic. In fact, Shell GTL Fuel was not detectable in soil 51 days after being introduced. The fuel is also more benign to human health than conventional diesel – it is harmless if inhaled and poses a low risk of eye irritation and skin damage.

REDUCED NOISE POLLUTION - Getting too loud? Noise levels in some engines can be reduced by 1-4 dB with Shell GTL Fuel’s more uniform combustion. The high cetane number of the fuel shortens the ignition delay, reducing diesel knock intensity and combustion noise in both heavy-duty and light-duty diesel engines.

STORE SAFER, FOR LONGER - With no bio content and a CFPP below -20°C, Shell GTL Fuel has a longer shelf life than conventional diesel. It also offers safer handling and storage characteristics due to a higher flash point.

WINTER GRADE FUEL, ALL YEAR ROUND - Shell GTL Fuel has excellent low temperature performance, with a low cloud point and improved cold start performance due to the high cetane number.

Who is fuelling change? As a tried and tested product with proven benefits, many businesses across multiple sectors including construction, transport, public sector and agriculture are already lowering emissions and improving air quality by using Shell GTL Fuel in their operations and fleets.

These include;

  • Bedford Borough Council
  • Brakes
  • Hitachi
  • Jacksons
  • Morgan Sindall
  • Murphy
  • Power Plane
  • Derived from natural methane gas.
  • ‘Drop in Fuel’ – direct replacement for conventional diesel fuels EN590 / BS2869.
  • Suitable for unmodified diesel engines in any blend ratio from 0 to 100% (fully miscible in any proportion)
  • Colourless – virtually transparent.
  • Almost odourless (zero aromatics)
  • Higher Cetane number than diesel – better combustion efficiency.
  • Virtually sulphur free
  • FAME free – no water pickup in storage
  • Bio-degradable - environmentally ‘friendly’.
  • Higher Flash point – safer storage & handling.
  • Higher Calorific Value (CV) compared to EN590 diesel - 44.1 MJ/kg versus 42.9 for EN590 gasoil.
