The major cause of turbo-charger trouble is lack of lubrication. This oil lag can result in bearing damage, wheel rub or seal damage.
After you shut down your hot engine the oil pressure drops to zero PSI. As the turbine’s wheel winds down to stop its heat is conducted to the bearings and seals. The little oil that is left often breaks down – leaving varnish and carbon deposits. Thus the lack of lubrication damages bearings and can result in a major breakdown. At cold engine start the main oil feed line to the turbo is empty, so your turbine rotates on dry bearings until oil is pumped into the turbocharger, naturally this causes excessive wear.
The Turbo-Guard is simply an add-on reservoir that prolongs the life of you turbo-charger by automatically correcting the lubrication lag that creates turbo problems. The Turbo-Guard provides immediate oil flow at engine shutdown and also at cold start, preventing bearings from running dry.
After the engine has run for about 30 seconds the Turbo-Guard’s reservoir begins to fill with oil and does so until the pressure in the reservoir reaches the PSI that the engine is supplying. This pressure remains as long as the engine is operating, taking nothing away from the turbo. The Turbo-Guard’s reservoir has a capacity of one-half litre and has a pressure rating of 1400 lbs. The unit’s ball check valve can carry 11 gallons of oil per minute to the turbo, the check valve in no way restricts the oil flow.
At the very moment of hot engine shut down, before the engine pressure drops to zero, the Turbo-Guard’s ball check valve closes. This directs the oil still under pressure in the reservoir into the turbo-charger (which is still rotating at high speed). This special lubrication continues for a period of about 5 minutes, protecting bearings and carrying away some of the built up heat.
When the Turbo-Guard’s check valve closes at hot engine shut down it retains oil in the feed line. So next time you start up the engine, lubrication is immediately available to the turbo.
